With large areas of protected wetlands, Cabarita has only limited development, creating a quiet, relaxed holiday atmosphere. Bounded by Nature Reserve to the north and west and the Pacific Ocean to the east, this typical coastal village of some 3500+ residents represents a unique lifestyle.

Cabarita Beach 2488 Community Forum

Content Wanted!

We are looking for content.

Reprint of article published in The Tweed Sun Thursday 11th June 2009

TEEN pests are terrorising Bogangar residents, holding noisy weekend parties and throwing bottles at anyone who complains. One resident is so upset at the misbehaviour that she is demanding Tweed Council do something about it. She was too frightened of reprisals to be named publicly, but said she had had enough after years of torment. ‘‘Most of the people in the area have now put up fences to keep the youths from running through their yards and there is a real element of fear in the community,’’ she said.‘‘The Cabarita kids have their own 2488 gang and on weekends there is a big crowd which comes down from Kingscliff to join them. ‘‘Whenever the police come out they are simply overwhelmed by the numbers, especially the way the village was designed with walkways between all the streets … and they just scatter.’’ She said she had also lobbied Tweed MP Geoff Provest to increase the number of police in the area but says she feels parents should be held responsible for the actions of their children. ‘‘The police know who the ringleaders are but catching them in the act is just so difficult,’’ she said. ‘‘The worst area is Barbara Rochester Park, which has about five exits so there is never a chance of catching anybody. ‘‘They also use the hard banksia cones from the trees there as missiles and nobody passing within their range is safe.’’ She said residents wanted the park shut down as it was no longer being used by families.

It seems almost like a regular Saturday night event.

Once again groups of youths (~20-30) congregate in the Main Street Plaza and car park beneath, a popular sheltered, yet well lit area and haunt. Creating a public disturbance late at night (11.00pm) they shout foul abuse at each other, start fights, throwing stolen milk crates and those old enough to have a licence perform wheelies and spin outs as they rev-up their engines in Hastings Road and demolish vacant blocks. This time they even bought their own portable amplified music equipment and proceeded to subject local residents to decibels unaccustomed to the human ear. According to the local Police Officer at Tweed Heads (Kingscliff telephone diverted to Tweed) several residents rang to complain. After more calls the Police finally arrived about an hour later. By this time the kids had run off again into the night like little ferrets. They just scatter as soon as the Police arrive. This is a difficult situation for the Officers considering they are under-resourced for such a large territory they cover. When approached one of the Officers said: “ There is nothing we can do except scare them off. If we had some more Police that would be good. This is it, what you see is what you get!” (Referring to one patrol vehicle, two officers) No peace in Cabba 2488.

It was on the evening of Saturday 4th April 2009 when residents of the usually quiet town of Cabarita Beach awoke to the gangs of teenage youths running amok riot fashion through the streets of this supposed tranquil retreat. According to unconfirmed local reports a further brawl broke out in the local bar, forcing the bar to close. Whether these two incidents are related is not known. The local manager of the bar refused to comment.

It was relatively dark and overcast as I and other residents covertly observed the mellay from the security of windows and balconies. At first I could only see approximately twenty youths, but somehow more appeared and I estimate somewhere between 30 and 40, possibly even 50 started to congregate in the Main Street Plaza and adjacent car park beneath, a popular sheltered area and haunt. It didn’t take long for matters to escalate and get out of hand. Groups of intoxicated youths shouted foul abuse at each other and passers-by in language too obscene to quote here, racial slurring, homophobia and anything else accessible from their limited vocabulary. They obstructed traffic on the main road as they ran to and fro throwing objects. I witnessed a smaller congregation of youths beating and kicking another person lying helplessly on the pavement. Young girls were present as they encouraged this senseless violence. I overheard a group of youths hiding from the police in an adjacent park saying “Let’s go and do the Kindergarten again, that was fun! (Evidence of broken Kindergarten furniture was seen in a vacant block). We need more booze! Run the cops are coming!” As they bellowed at each other with obscenities they scattered in a multi directional frenzy, behaviour consistent with a pack of wild animals. Cabarita Beach does not have a local police station. Kingscliff and Tweed Heads police serves the area, and would-be perpetrators are well aware of this. When I telephoned Kingscliff police my call was automatically transferred to Tweed Heads, where the constable was very helpful and noted the details. It is obvious by their own admission that they are very under resourced and it is not always possible to respond quickly when their presence is needed in Cabarita Beach. A police car did eventually arrive. After sounding their siren they left. This appeared to have little effect as kids ran in all directions under the cover of the night, soon to return. It almost appears that spotters with mobile phones were warning them. One resident claimed that they actually threw rocks at the police vehicles as they departed. I sympathise with the police. How can two officers control or apprehend such a large group of athletic alcohol fuelled kids? Typically and understandably it is natural for residents, many whom are elderly to hide from view behind the protection of their homes whilst they observe. Most do not wish to become involved in the fear that they may be harmed. I place myself in this position. So how do we solve the problem? These agile kids are obviously bored and have nothing better to do on a Saturday evening, except to outwit the police in a game they find amusing and challenging. I suppose one can’t blame them for being bored, let’s face it we were all teenagers once, and living in a small community lacking in modern youth facilities can be challenging for them. Perhaps this needs to be addressed, but more importantly it’s the behaviour that needs urgent thought. In my opinion this falls back to the parents. It surprises me and I ask, “Do the parents know where their kids are and what they are doing? Do they really care or have they lost control of their own children?” It’s local opinion that these gangs mainly comprise of youths not resident in Cabarita Beach, but rather from surrounding areas. Why they choose Cabarita Beach is a question only they can answer. Last month a 14-year boy held up the local bottle shop masked in a balaclava bearing a fake pistol. He was later apprehended. In a previous incident some months back, I had some guests up from Melbourne. It was a typically beautiful moonlit evening and we decided to visit the beach for a short stroll around 9.00pm on a Saturday. As we crossed the Coast Road stones were hurled at us by a group of youths no older than 15 who were congregating around the local Bakery. One stone struck the head of a guest. I confronted the group only to be abused by a young girl of around 14. I was flabbergasted at the audacity of this teenager, half my height who continued her abusive and foul verbal retort towards us. Where do these kids come from? It’s time for a community response and some action. More police presence required for Cabarita Beach.

Author’s name withheld

Quote from Australian Youth Forum

“I believe that there are many contributing factors to teen violence. Alcohol and drugs are huge factors in the issue of teen violence, we need to reduce the access that teens have to alcohol and crack down on the issue of drugs. I think education programs in schools talking about the effects of drugs and alcohol and about the consequences of violence, as well as teaching the student’s self- defence with littlest amount of violence used are great ideas to help reduce the growing rates of violence in teens”.
